Farmer Interview Guide

About your operation:

  1. Can you tell me about your operation?
    1. How long has it been around?
    2. How many acres is it?
    3. What do you grow?
    4. How many people work on the farm?
  2. What do you think is special or unique about your operation?

Production and Inputs:

  1. How do you irrigate and where do you get your water?
  2. Where do you get your seeds? And where do you get your tools?
  3. Do you use soil amendments?
    1. If so, what do you use and where do you source those?
  4. Do you get loans, grants, or other funding resources to support your operation?
    1. If so, from what sources?
  5. Do you receive Technical Assistance from Extension or others?
  6. Do you compost at your operation?
    1. If not, what do you do with waste from the harvest or other on-farm waste?

Processing, Distribution, & Aggregation:

  1. Do you work with any processors or distributors, or do you handle all of that yourself? If you do work with processors or distributors, can you describe how you work with them?
  2. Do you aggregate from any other farmers? If so, how many? And where are they based and what do you source from them?

Sales & Marketing:

Food Hub/Distributor Interview Guide

About your operation:

  2. What do you think is special or unique about your operation?
  3. How is your operation funded - grants, sales, financing, etc.?

Sourcing:

  1. What types of products do you source, how many producers do you source from, and where are they located?
  2. Do you have any specific requirements for those you source from?
  3. How do products get to your operation?

Processing, Distribution, & Aggregation

  1. Is your operation involved in any processing? If so, how?
  2. What types of aggregation and other services do you offer to the producers you work with?
  3. Can you describe your distribution capacities - in terms of physical assets as well as distribution routes/ networks (to & from, frequency, mileage)? Who is involved in your operation’s distribution?

Sales & Marketing:
